"Sane Men" is dedicated to Madalyn Murray O'Hair
May It Comfort You
When they exposed their noose and knife
And swore to take a black man's life,
I felt you shudder in the dark
And feared you'd perish in the strife:
Why does the Negro's presence make
So many do a double-take?
What foments muddied minds to mob
And all that's decent to forsake?
Two boards arranged to recreate
The burning cross that preaches hate
For niggers, darkies, coons and such?
We know to this they gravitate.
If only there'd been honest light
To help them see the savage sight
That darkness and thick smoke concealed,
They'd shield you from this racist blight.
But no light--just insanity"!
Devoid of all humanity,
They exercised a cruel streak
To nurse a baseless vanity.
And even as with peace they flirt,
Their young these bigots still pervert.
The past proves mobs to decent folk
Just temporarily revert.
So I won't let a lull obscure
The fact that you are not secure.
It's just a teasing time that tricks.
A respite nothing does assure.
Instead I'll use the quietude,
While calm pervades this multitude,
To introduce a torch designed
To melt their icy attitude,
To captivate and redirect
Their passion and their intellect,
To shine upon your dignity
And thus inspire their respect.
And, may it comfort you to know,
Support exists, and it will grow.
The goal's for you to see the end
Of prejudicial light, my friend.
